The Pawnees and the Sioux each knew that the other was a strong enemy. They told war stories and mystical legends about each other. They also had legends about themselves.

For example, the Sioux told many tales about a tribesmen of theirs known as Red Leaf. He had blonde hair and stood more than six feet tall. Everyone knew that Red Leaf was a great warrior. The Sioux also believed that Red Leaf could see the future.

Once, when the Sioux were getting ready to fight the Pawnees, Red Leaf told his fellow warriors that they would encounter a left-handed Pawnee who had one white eye. Red Leaf warned that the man was very dangerous.

The battle began. Among the Pawnees was the very man Red Leaf had talked about—a left-handed warrior with one white eye. This man fought with incredible fury, injuring many men and killing one of the best Sioux warriors.

As the battle raged on, a group of Sioux killed the white-eyed warrior. They took his necklace and medicine pouch. Seven grains of corn spilled from the medicine pouch onto the ground.
